As I think of what I am going to write about a reaction paper I suddenly thought about the people power special presentation that we watch in our political science class, hosted by Mr. Cesar Montano. This presentation was entitled Lakas Sambayanan: PEOPLE POWER and this is all I can say.
Over the past 60 years, the republic has undergone major challenges that have included a persistent communist that led insurgency, Moro-Islamic separatism, the 1972-1986 Marcos dictatorship, two people power revolts, military unrest and the worsening economic crisis.
Under the long Marcos era (1966-1986), the situation of people further deteriorated to the Moro and Lumad areas of Mindanao, Sulu, in the Cordillera and elsewhere, large-scale land grabbing, destructive government projects and human rights abuses generated mass resistance through legal and armed means. Many indigenous people's organizations and advocacy groups were performed during this period such as LABAN, UNIDO, NAMFREL, and the biggest of all is the PEOPLE POWER REVOLUTION also known as EDSA revolution. It was a series of non-violent demonstrations in the Philippines that occurred in 1986. And it is sometimes referred to as the yellow ribbon during the arrival of Ninoy Aquino. These protests were the culmination of a long resistance by the people against the 20-year running authoritarian regime of then president Ferdinand Marcos and made news headlines as the revolution that surprised the world. The majority of the demonstrations took place at Epifanio de los Santos or EDSA, in Quezon City, Manila and involved over a thousand Filipino civilians as well as several political, military and religous figures as Jaime Cardinal Sin. The protests, fueled by a resistance and opposition of years of corrupt governance by Marcos, occurred from Feb. 22-25,1986. The downfall of the Marcos dictatorship led to some political reforms among which were provisions in the 1987 Constitution that explicitly recognized people's rights to ancestral land and region autonomy. When Marcos fled Malacanang Palace to the United States and concede to Corazon Aquino as President of the Philippines.
As a young citizen of the Philippines, I could say that in any form of Government as long as the people who are in the positions are doing their job to govern the Filipino nation in good faith there will be progress and the development for us Filipinos. But sad to say it only happens during the elections that most of the politicians will only sympathizing the people in order for them to get the roles on return.
